When you think about retirement, what does it bring to mind? Waking up late, taking a long shower and having breakfast while watching the news then going out with some friends? Taking your backpack and travelling around the world? Spending time with your children and grandchildren? The real question is: Will you be able to do everything you want during your retirement? What are the major concerns that may challenge your goals? There was a survey conducted by some financial institutions regarding the major concerns about retirement. Here are the results: |

Being Alone (1 out of 5 people)
There is roughly 20% of the population worried about being alone at retirement. If you spent your life working like a demon and left your friends, family and love behind. You might end up pretty lonely.
There is also the fear of being left out because you don’t belong to the work force anymore. While you have 100% of your time free, your son who has 2 children and full time job might not have a lot of weekend to spend with you.
The key is to find hobbies and make friends that are in situations similar to yours. If you have a lot of free time, you could find like-minded people to share your passions with and have some fun.
Boredom (1 out of 5 people)
Being bored is really close of being alone. However, this is more related to the fact that you have been running your whole life and suddenly, everything stops and you have too much time on your hands.
We often see people go back to work or falling into a depression after they have been retired for a year. Even though you don’t work anymore, it doesn’t mean that you have to stop living! Draw up a list of your interests and things you would like to do while retired. The more you have on this list, the better it is.
Some people go back to work to do what they really love, others go back to school to learn something new. You can also travel, start a project, do some renovations, give your time to a non-profit organization, join a club (running club, reading club, poker club… this one could be expensive depending on how good your are
).
There are two other major concerns about retirement that we will discuss in a further post. In the meantime, I leave you by saying that more than 40% are concerned about the two last topics…
